It's Halloween Kids... be careful out there

To be honest, Halloween is not my favorite holiday, but from the response (number of hits) from my halloween costume articles, I know that a great many people love it. So be careful as not everyone you encounter tonight it looking for a carefree good time. There are those to take advantage of the fact that people have their guards down. So Here are some things you should do:

  • Look out the door to see who is there before you open it for trick or treaters
  • Don't leave a young child alone to give out candy
  • Send Kids in groups to trick-or-treat (over 10 years old) or better yet, go with them
  • Make sure everyone has flashlights
  • Make sure masks don't impede vision
  • Don't go to houses that are uninviting (without halloween decorations or lights)
  • Don't eat anything you get before going home and inspecting it for tampering
  • Be extra careful tonight driving through your neighborhoods so you don't hit a child.

Local Parks under construction have little drought impact

Many of the parks in and around Gwinnett are in the midst of major construction. Amazingly this construction has little to no effect on the drought due to clever irrigation, or lack of it alltogether. In Lawrenceville a nature trail is being built to the tune of $750,000. They are using native flowers that can exist solely on rainwater. (this unnamed trail is still in the design phase). Other park projects are found here.

Flights from Lawerenceville to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport

Tasgola Bruner asked earlier this month the following question:

"Will you fly Wings (airlines) out of Lawrenceville?"

My first thought was Heck yes... where is it going?

It's going to the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport... oh... probably not. For me to drive the 15 minutes it would take me to get to the Lawrenceville Airport, get parked, and boarded and wait for flight time. Even assuming the flight takes off on time, and all is efficient, I would far exceed the time and cost it would take me to drive the 45 minutes to the airport.

Now if the airlines starts making flights to say... New York, Florida, Richmond VA... let me know... I'm in!

Discover Mills Outlet

Discover Mills Outlet Mall is an interesting place.

I like to get exercise in the mornings before the store opens by walking the 1 mile lap "track" around the mall. You can join the Mall Walker Club if you wish.

I like to have meetings in the food court (during non meal rush hours of course).

I love to shop at Discover Mills too... my favorite store is Ross.

I love to eat there too, my favorite restaurants are Chili's in the food court and Carino's outside the mall.

The most interesting thing I think there is about the mall is the Church. I have never seen a mall church before. I believe it is called St Davids.

The best times to shop are weekday mornings. Saturdays and Sundays are not a good idea at all.

So Who Is the Nosy Neigbor

Hi. My name is Andrea and I decided to start this blog because my good friend who runs the Snellvile blog encouraged me. Like many of the other people in Lawrenceville, I am a transplant. I am from New York... Yonkers to be exact. After living all over the state of NY and also living in New Orleans for several years, we, my family and I found our way to the greater Atlanta area.

We chose our city carefully. I studied schools, realestate, and all other demographics before I finally purchased a house after living here almost 2 years. I love it here. I like the proximity to the city. I like the racial mix. I like people and the flavor of the area.

What I like the most about Lawrenceville is the downtown area. I am entralled by the progress going on on Crogan St and the surrounding areas and the down home flavor of the city. If you are new to the area, or like Lawrenceville as much as I do... subscribe to my blog.

This week in Lawrenceville: Blog recap Oct 24- Oct 27, 2007

So a few days ago, I decided to start this blog. Call me crazy, Call me bored, Call me inspired… or don’t call me at all! This blog is meant to be read anyway. I will do my utmost to keep this blog alive as a service to residents of Lawrenceville GA. You can help keep it active by forwarding my link to your neighbors, and even adding me as a link to your website. If you have a business in Lawrenceville you would like to advertise, please contact me at mysnellvilleblog@gmail.com.

Here is the week in review:

On October 24th I started and designed this blog. As stated my plans are to include local news, politics, and services. The Sidebar of this blog is where you can look to find listings and resources pertinent to Lawrenceville residents. A big story in the news was a recent attack in Tribble Mills park where a woman’s dog saved her from an attacker. The Drought has been a big topic lately, check out this blog to participate in my short poll on an idea for water savings. On my first day of writing this blog, I also familiarized myself and readers with our local mayor. Also, if you have nothing to do this week, check out the Ghost Tours in the city of Lawrenceville.

On October 25th Water conservation was still on the top of my mind, and this post was prompted by an article by Rick Badie. ATM Crooks are also serious business here lately. If you are new to Lawrenceville, and even if you are not, these important numbers can come in handy.

On October 26, I told you about my favorite Chinese Restaurants. I also wrote about the interesting facts of Lawrenceville GA.

Finally, On October 27, I found information about the Gwinnett Historical Society ,Gwinnett Humane Society, and the Lawrenceville Community Center, just in case you are itching to get involved with something.

Facts about Lawrenceville GA

Did you know:

  • The city is named after Captain James Lawrence, commander of the Frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812.
  • The two most famous people born in Lawrenceville gained their fame elsewhere. Charles Henry Smith, born in 1826, left as a young man and lived most of his life in other Georgia towns. Beginning during the Civil War, he wrote humorous pieces for Atlanta newspapers under the name Bill Arp. Ezzard Charles, born in Lawrenceville in 1921, grew up in Cincinnati, where opportunities for African-Americans were far better at the time. He eventually was heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
  • Lawrenceville was one of many venues in the nation where Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt faced obscenity charges in the late 1970s.

These facts and more found at wikipedia.org

Chinese Anyone?

My family loves Chinese food, and we have three major places we like to eat or get take out.

Jade Dragon Wok Out our first love. This is definately a takout place and great to grab lunch from. The food is a bit on the sweet side, but that is why we love it.
It is located at 1414 Lawrenceville Suwanee Rd and the number is 770-339-1101.

For fine dining, we love Big Joy II. I think he service is the best part of the experience. We always get quick and friendly service and are never left wanting for anything. Oh, and the food is delicious too. If you like Authentic or spicy Chinese food you should go here.
665 Duluth Hwy., Suite 301, Lawrenceville, GA 30045 (770)995-1919 / (770)995-1539

My newest find, China Gate Restaurant is a guilty pleasure! The service is good, with the servers being a little chatty, but the food is BETTER! My friends at the two other places may miss me. While this one is actually in Duluth, it is closest to my home. 2330 Satellite Blvd, Duluth, GA 30096, (678)473-1688

*note: My chinese food taste guage is strictly based on the fried dumplings and dipping sauce. mmmmmm... dumplings!

ATM crooks hit Lawrenceville WAMU

Beware when you use your ATM cards. A Skimmer is being used to steal bank card information, most recently from the WAMU on Collins Hill Road. This happened to me recently at a gas station. Since then, every time I use my atm card, I examine the card reader, and even yank on it to make sure it is the real thing.

What does a skimmer look like? Here are some websites that will help you spot skimmer and avoid having your account drained.

Are you conserving water?

Yesterday, local ACJ blogger/ columnist Rick Badie wrote about the water restrictions in his article, "What a bunch of Poop" that talks about a family that have always reserved water being restricted from cleaning bird droppings off their porch. In the end, he mentions the problem coming down to there suddenly being a state of emergency when we (the legislators, and zoning people) didn't see this problem coming.

So the couple was told to salvage shower water to clean the porch. It's actually a good idea. As a matter of fact, I am going upstairs to take a shower right now and am bringing my shallow dish pan into the shower with me so I can water the plants on my porch that yesterday's rain could not reach.

Meanwhile, what are you doing to cut back on water use? Do you think this is a good idea?

Thinking about the Drought

Instead of turning our neighborhoods into a Police State with neighbors tattling on each other, why not reward those who can cut their water bill by say... 25 percent and penalize those who don't cut their water bill by 10%?

Do you think this is a crazy idea?
Please leave a comment stating Yes, or No, and why?

meanwhile... check your toilet for leaks

Watch Your Back in Tribble Mill Park

If you are a Lady Jogger in Tribble Mill Park, watch your back.. better yet bring a big dog.

A woman was recently attacked and saved by her Yellow Lab who turned into "Cujo"!
