It was horrible to have to type the title of this blog post.
I was so saddened by the news that an 18-month-old was killed when the child's mother backed the family vehicle down the driveway of their Lawrenceville Ga home. It was just a normally boring household chore. She needed to back the minivan up so she could move the trash can. She didn't know her child had wandered out of the house. I have four children, so I know from personal experience - kids sure can be quiet when they want to be, and they love to follow others out of the house.
I have really been thinking about and praying for the mom. Any of us could have done this accidentally. I hope she will be able to forgive herself. It was a mistake, she couldn't see or know her baby was behind the car. God bless her, I just want to hug her and reassure her that she is a good mom. It could have happened to anyone. Just that one second changed lives forever. This is not the only case of this happening. It's the type of accident that can happen regardless of where you live, your social status or your education level. The same type of accident claimed the life of Steven Curtis Chapman's daughter. You've probably heard of him. He's a well-known Christian musician.
So this is another reminder, a wake-up call to all parents - and I know it's a wake up call to myself. Seems I am always in and out of the driveway, my mind occupied by where I need to go, what I need to do. There are a lot of kids in my neighborhood. I'm going to work harder now to double-check that my driveway is clear.
They say that being a parent is the hardest job in the world. They are right.
